Pay It Forward Coaching-Tribute to Colin Hays

“From my mother, I learned wholeheartedly give yourself to others and to try everyday to benefit from those around you. I knew in high school I wanted to accomplish this not only personally but professionally. I pursued a career in dentistry where I can affect the lives of others in a very positive way and that is something that has always brought me tremendous joy in life. I hope that you all find something that brings you happiness in life.”  —Colin Hays

Colin’s Story

In July of 2014, the time of his AML (acute myeloid leukemia) diagnosis, Colin had just graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in biological science and had been accepted to the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry, which he had planned to begin in the fall. Plans were put on hold and Colin immediately began an aggressive treatment regiment that included chemotherapy and radiation treatments in hopes of pushing his disease in to remission; once in remission he would receive a bone marrow transplant. Colin remained optimistic throughout his 3 months of intensive treatment. He visited with friends, attended a Nebraska Cornhusker football game against Miami, and participated in a bone marrow registry event hosted by his would-be dental class.   He talked about the future and resuming his life once he’d beaten cancer.  He so much aspired to play a bigger better newer game in life.  A year prior in 2013, Colin took a Gerontology course where he according to his professor did a phenomenal job at his End of Life Planning Project where he was able to share his wishes and learning’s in this game of life.  In 2015, Colin’s mother and inspiration passed away so this Pay It Forward Coaching in Tribute of Colin I am certain she would be proud of. Colin never wanted to be forgotten and this is my way of keeping that wish to my nephew. Colin was an avid golfer and Nebraska Cornhusker fan—Go Big Red!

“Colin’s youth pastor Joni shared that from her perspective Colin prepared for the What If’s….however he was also a great at asking “What if… in every aspect of his life.” Colin wanted to play a bigger better game in life by pursuing a career in dentistry. He had many mentors in his life. Over the course of my career, I have been very fortunate to have had many mentors & coaches who have taken me under their wing, providing me with guidance and support. Colin also shared stories of his mentors & coaches with me that made a difference in his Game of Life. I have chosen to honor Colin by “paying it forward” to those who want to play a bigger, better, newer game and could utilize a little help to get started.
